North East penalised for being ahead in vaccine rollout
It’s extremely disappointing to hear that the North East is having supplies cut because it is ahead in the vaccine rollout.
Labour group leader Susan Dungworth said: “Northumberland has done a brilliant job in rolling out the vaccine and we were pleased and proud to be be part of a region which was so well organised it was the top region in the country for getting people vaccinated. How disappointing to find our supplies are now being slowed down to allow other regions to catch up.
“We’ve been calling on the government to go further and develop a round the clock vaccine service which is accessible to all in vaccination centres, pharmacies and community facilities seven days a week.
“Nationally Labour  is calling for key workers in critical professions to be added to the first phase of the vaccination programme. We also want to see teachers being vaccinated.
“This pandemic has been very challenging for so many people in Northumberland and the whole country. We’re all desperate to see the light at the end of the tunnel and get back to some sort of normality where we can see family and friends without putting them or ourselves at risk.”
Labour lead Sir Keir Starmer said: “Thanks to our brilliant scientists, we were the first country in the world to get the vaccine. Let’s be the first in the world to get our country vaccinated.”
Susan Dungworth added: “The pandemic is doing untold damage to our economy, our children and our mental health. It’s absolutely vital that we make the vaccination roll out happen quickly and safely.
“We also need to think about recovery. Recovery for our children who have lost nearly a year of conventional schooling and the chance to be with their friends and classmates. Recovery for individuals and families, many of whom have lost jobs and livelihoods and are now reliant on Universal Credit and food banks, just to get by. Recovery of our mental health and wellbeing.

“This vaccine programme is a vital part of seeing an end to this terrible pandemic.”
