Recent claims by the Tory led Northumberland County Council are, at best, economical with the truth, says Northumberland Labour.
ย
Claims that Berwick has largely been ignored by previous administration is simply untrue, says Northumberland Labour leader Scott Dickinson.
ย
He said: โThe recent press article in the local newspapers was a case of smoke a mirrors to disguise the reality of what this Tory council is doing. Supporting the removal of Universal Credit and attempting to drive through a lack of council tax support for those who desperately need it; well you have to find a way to dress that up don’t you? This ridiculously slogan of build back better; build back Berwick is just empty words.โ
ย
โข Arts funding โ this is being provided by the North of Tyne Authority headed by Labour mayor Jamie Driscoll
โข A new hospital โ the council under Labour loaned Northumbria Healthcare the ยฃ25m needed to build it
โข A new leisure centre โ a ยฃ20m investment, started under Labour
โข Social housing โ none has been built in Berwick under the Tory administration
ย
โTo say that nothing happened because of either Labour led council or a Liberal Democrat MP is simply untrue.
ย
โIt’s annoying to say the least that this council rides on the back of the sheer determination and hard work of Labour at a council and combined authority level and has the cheek to claim it as their own.
ย
โI am sure the people of Berwick are not taken in by this; I sincerely hope not.
ย
โWhen we led the council we were committed to helping to make Berwick thrive and succeed as a town. The fact that many of the projects we started are only just coming to fruition now tells you more that the national Tory government was standing in the way of progress in the town.โ
