The current government is letting ordinary people down at every level, says Northumberland Labour.

Northumberland Labour’s shadow cabinet member for business Lynne Grimshaw said: “For years we’ve been told that it’s the Tories you can depend on for looking after the economy. The evidence shows that this has been blown out of the water with the government’s performance.

“Labour believes in looking after the people first. Clearly, when former PM Liz Truss and Chancellor Kwai Kwarteng carried out what can only be described as an experiment on the British people, it was clear to see their priority was not the effect this ridiculous experiment would have on the people of this country.

“The Tories do not, and never have, put ordinary people first. During their time in power, the super-rich has become even richer while many ordinary people are wondering how they’re going to heat their homes and put food on the table.

“When you look at issues like transport, we are one of the few countries in Europe which heaps the cost of transport onto the travelling public. Other governments know that, if you want to get people out of their cars, you have to subsidise public transport and make it reliable, accessible and affordable. This approach also tackles climate change; one bus carrying 50 people is far better for the environment than 50 cars on the road.

“Labour wants to bring this country back to being the strong, vibrant economy it once was and the starting point will always be in the interests of ordinary people. Working people provide the wealth in this country, not the super-rich.
