Shadow Cabinet Portfolio Holder Healthy Lives Councillor Liz Dunn opened the event with: It is with immense pleasure that we gather here at Lynemouth Library to honor the remarkable accomplishments of the Lynemouth Writers Group and the launch of their second book.
This year, as the council’s library service commemorates its centennial, this group stands as a shining example of how our libraries can foster creativity and community spirit.
Lynemouth may not boast cutting-edge facilities. Indeed, we faced significant challenges in securing a new location for the library following the closure of our local resource centre. Immense gratitude is owed to the Day Centre; their support has been crucial, and without it, today’s celebration of the group’s success might not have been possible.
In our rapidly digitizing world, the role of librarians is often underestimated, yet they are among the most enthusiastic, committed, and industrious members of our communities. We are fortunate to have such an outstanding team here.
Mr. Wise, our librarian, is deeply committed to this library, serving as a veritable wellspring of local knowledge and history. He is constantly working to ensure the library remains a vital part of life for the people of Lynemouth and Ellington.
A couple of weeks ago, during my visit to our library, I had a conversation with a local resident who had come to collect her weekly book selection. She had entrusted David with choosing eight titles for her—what a wonderful service!
Jane and Sarah have joined our community to lead the Reading for Wellbeing Project, and the positive impact is evident. It’s crucial for our smaller communities, especially those facing economic challenges, to receive such support. Often, residents here are unable to afford or lack the means to visit larger libraries, even if they’re just a few miles away.
Therefore, let’s take a moment to applaud THE LYNEMOUTH WRITERS GROUP and everyone involved in making it a reality. Their efforts will be prominently celebrated in our modest, yet incredibly significant, library!
