New analysis from Northumberland Labour reveals that families with children in school are set to save a combined £2,286,400 a year thanks to a new cap on branded uniform items in the new Children’s Wellbeing and Schools Bill, which will see the average family save £50 per child. Families who take advantage of free Breakfast Clubs will save even more –  a total of £500 per year.

The analysis comes as the Bill passes through the House of Commons. It will:

• Drive high and rising standards in schools through common-sense reform to put more qualified, expert teachers in classrooms, teaching a cutting-edge curriculum.
• Cut the cost of sending children to school to make life easier for families, with free breakfast clubs and a cap on the number of branded school uniform items.
• Stop children falling through the cracks through landmark reforms to safeguarding and children’s social care – no more empty words or ‘lessons learned’, but real action to keep children safe.

Publishing the analysis, Northumberland Labour’s Shadow Cabinet Member for Children and Young People Services Cllr Julie Foster said,

“Children in Northumberland deserve the very best start in life – that means access to good schools, real action to keep them safe, and support for parents with the cost of living.

“School uniform shouldn’t break the bank, and we can’t have a situation where parents in Northumberland can’t afford to work because the cost of early morning childcare means work doesn’t pay.

“Labour promised to take action on the cost of living and that’s exactly what we are doing.

“It will take time to turn Britain around, but this is the change people voted for – and that change has begun.”
