Northumberland’s Labour Group is delighted that chief executive, Daljit Lally, will return to her role in the council.

This comes after the council’s staff appeals committee decided to end the chief executive’s suspension.

Labour Group leader Susan Dungworth said: “It makes a change for an employee to stand up to powerful politicians and still be in post. Well done to her for having the courage.

The Labour Group fought the decision to send the chief executive on a period of extended leave from the start, standing side by side with whistle blowers in local government.

“The communities of Northumberland will be delighted to have her back at the helm at this trying time. She has always provided confidence and a steady hand in her dual role with the NHS.

“We were never extended the courtesy of knowing the reasons for Daljit Lally’s suspension and this led us to think this was more about personalities than actual events.

“We sincerely hope that this inexcusable situation never happens again. When officers and staff in the council raise concerns they should be listened to and the issues thoroughly investigated.

“The reason why the vast majority of people raise concerns is that they believe the interests of local people are not be being served properly. Whistleblowing is a vital aspect of the checks and balances all good organisations have to hold their leaders to account.”

The former nurse and NHS worker will return to post to the delight of staff and the majority of elected members.
