People cannot keep getting hit with cuts and charges, say Northumberland Labour. This government must change course.

Northumberland Labour is joining the party’s national call for the government to change course, increase the minimum wage and urgently help people faced with rising energy costs.

Labour leader Scott Dickinson said: “This government has hit millions of working people with a triple whammy of rising energy prices, an increase in National Insurance and cuts to Universal Credit.

“This week the government has made the choice to cut the income of a worker on Universal Credit earning £18,000 a year by £1,100. That’s almost the same amount as the average annual energy bill taken from the pockets of working people.

“This is the same Tory government that has wasted billions on crony contracts, cut taxes for people buying second homes and handed out super tax deductions for the biggest companies.

“This is the same government that has axed the Green Homes Grant, scrapped the zero carbon homes standard and lost the storage facility that held three quarters of our gas.

“Tory government failures have paved the way for the crisis that will hit families and businesses and as usual it will be the British people who pay the price.

“We’re calling for the government to change course and cancel the cut, increase the minimum wage to at least £10 an hour and urgently help households with the cost of rising bills, for example by making automatic and extending the Warm Homes Discount.

“Northumberland Labour made a manifesto pledge to increase pay to at least the living wage. It’s about time this government did the right thing for the people of this country.”
