Ashington councillor Mark Purvis says that, after years of discussion, the relocation of Northumberland College is very welcome news for the town.

Councillor Purvis said: “The idea of moving the college to a new site has been years in the making. I am absolutely delighted that this is happening at long last.

“The facilities will be excellent and exactly what’s needed to support lecturers in educating and training future generations.

“As well as myself who has been pushing for this for some considerable time, there have been many people and organisations involved in getting us this far.

“This is the right outcome for the town of Ashington, teaching and support staff and students who will undoubtedly benefit from the opportunities and facilities it will provide.

“It’s a great boost to the town.”

Northumberland Labour leader Scott Dickinson added: “The people of Ashington have had to deal with many ups and down and promises being made and broken about their town.

“I’d like to pay tribute to Mark who I know has worked tirelessly for this and I look forward to seeing the college open in its new location.
