Northumberland Labour says the Tory party, who were always considered to be the party that could be trusted with the country’s finances, are no longer trusted to act in the public’s interest.

Northumberland’s Labours Deputy Leader Liz Simpson said: “Quite frankly there are young children looking after their pocket money better than this government looks after hard-earned money. They used to be the party that could be trusted with the country’s finances. Not anymore.

“Twelve years of Tory rule have brought our financial foundations down and working people are paying the price for Tory incompetence.

“While people with wealth keep getting more wealthy ordinary working people are continually feeling the pinch with higher food, energy, and housing costs.

“Put simply this government is not serving the people who voted for them in 2019. The country is slipping further and further down the international table through its self-imposed financial stupidity like the disastrous Kwateng experiment which put hundreds on people’s mortgages overnight and threatened people’s pensions.

“What on earth is wrong with these people? They conduct an experiment that was never going to work after years of widening the gap between the haves and have-nots. There was no talk of cuts before September. The Tories have put us in this dreadful position deliberately.

“Working people should be able to afford to pay for the roof over their head, pay their energy bills, and feed themselves and their families. In a rich county like ours if this is not happening then government policies aren’t working.”
