Labour’s cost of living plans

Northumberland Labour says there is another way; there is an alternative to spiraling cost of living, particularly energy and housing costs.

Northumberland Labour Councillor Brian Gallacher said: “Nearly 13 years of Tory rule have turned the clock back decades.

“Who would have thought that the government would stand by and allow energy companies to make billions while ordinary people can’t afford to heat their homes.

“Rents are going up but the standard of housing is going down. We remember the appalling scenes of people living in mould and damp and the devastating effect this is having on their health and well-being. This should never be seen in any country, least of all a rich modern country like ours. The system is not working for the people it is supposed to be serving.”

Labour says the solution is:

  • Labour’s plan on clean power and insulating homes; households could be saving up to £1,400 off their annual bills, not just for one year, but for years to come;
  • a one-off windfall tax on energy giants and spending that on a package of support for energy bills including;
  • stopping the energy price cap going up from April. Right now, the government plans to expose households to a major new spike in prices in April;
  • a new insulation jump-start; a pot of funding that the government could use right now to supercharge home insulation across the country, saving families hundreds off their bills.
  • ending the scandalous penalty imposed on prepayment meter customers, ensuring customers do not pay more than those paying by direct debit, alongside a three-month moratorium on the forced installation of prepayment meters.
