As The Chancellor’s budget approaches, Northumberland Labour says it’s high time the government put working people first.

Deputy leader Liz Simpson said: “This is the first government in a generation where people feel much worse off. Many young people feel they have little hope of ever owning their own home. Poorly paid jobs mean people can’t feed their families, never mind save for the future.”

Labour is calling for the government to help people with the cost of living crisis by:

  • bringing in a proper, one-off windfall tax on oil and gas giants, to stop the energy price cap going up in April
  • freezing fuel duty at its current rate if there is headroom at the budget
  • scrapping non-dom tax status, to fund Breakfast Clubs across every primary school in England

Labour is planning for a fairer, greener, more dynamic country which works for everyone by:

  • getting to clean power by 2030
  • insulating 19 million homes in the Warm Homes Plan
  • using a National Wealth Fund to build British industry and investing in homegrown projects

Liz added: “As well as short-term measures, there needs to be a long-term plan. If elected we will work tirelessly to make the county and the country work for everyone enabling people to feel positive about their and their children’s futures.”
