Northumberland Labour says, if elected, a Labour government will work tirelessly to improve standards of living for everyone.

Leader Scott Dickinson said: “In a modern rich country like ours you wouldn’t expect to see people living in squalid conditions, young people with no hope of getting on the property ladder and families deciding whether to eat or heat their homes. Under the Tories, things have got much worse for so many people.

“Who would have thought in 2023 that we think food banks are normal. The dedicated people who work in them are amazing but it’s tragic that they’re needed in the 21st century.

“We want to see people in properly paid jobs so they have more money in their pockets and can even think about saving for the future. This is out of the question for so many people.

“It’s not rocket science; paying people properly creates more jobs. If you’ve got a bit of money in your pocket you can think about spending more on your home and family, investing in retraining for the job of your dreams, eating out, enjoying some entertainment and taking a holiday. All of those activities create jobs for other people who, in turn, spend their money in the economy. Conversely, depressing pay means people have less to spend and jobs are lost if people are unable to afford goods and services. This is basic economics but it seems the Tories were off the day that lesson was on the timetable.

“If elected, Labour will work hard to provide certainty and stability, rather the chaos and short-term fixes we’ve seen with this government.”
