The rise in child poverty since the Conservative government came to power is truly shameful, says Northumberland Labour.

Northumberland County Council’s shadow cabinet member for children and young people Julie Foster said: “The last 13 years have seen child poverty rise in a way that should simply be unthinkable in a rich modern country like ours.

“The number of children living in poverty is highest in the North East. We’re seeing families where parents are working, having to rely on foodbanks just to get by.

“Far from being a government which is working for the British people this government has systematically stripped income, decent housing, education and opportunities away from our young people.

“The Labour government of 1997-2000 worked tirelessly to eradicate child poverty and improve the life chances of young people by introducing a number of things including working tax credits and Sure Start centres.

“This government has deliberately plunged thousands of families into poverty. They should be ashamed of the damage they have done.

“A Labour government will make tackling poverty in all age groups a priority. We will work locally and nationally to bring change which will significantly improve the lives of local people.”
