As the NHS approaches its 75th anniversary on 5 July Northumberland Labour says it should receive the investment and support it needs to continue to care for people’s health needs.

Deputy leader of Northumberland’s shadow cabinet Liz Simpson said: “Despite its problems, the NHS continues to be the envy of the world. We are so fortunate that Nye Bevan had the determination to introduce this service to provide care, free at the point of need.

“It’s no exaggeration to say millions of lives have been enhanced and saved by the dedicated people who work in it, not just doctors, nurses and other healthcare professionals but the people who work behind the scenes to make sure buildings and equipment are safe, wards are clean, patients are fed and appointments are made. The Tories are always keen to have a go at what they call the bureaucrats, but the NHS would simply not function without them.

“In the Labour government years from 1997 to 2010 the NHS was transformed into a fantastic service with short waiting times in accident and emergency, for planned operations such as hip replacements and for suspected cancer. These standards were hard fought for and won, and it took time and effort to make sure they were maintained.

“Since getting into power the Conservative Liberal Democrat coalition, then the Tories deliberately let these standards slip. A Labour government would ensure this treasured and valued service can continue to serve people well into the future.”
