Northumberland Labour says it will work to ensure people who rent from private landlords have a safe home.
Councillor Anna Watson Shadow Cabinet member for Housing said: “We know the vast majority of private landlords look after their properties but, unfortunately, there is a tiny minority who are not providing a safe home for their tenants.
“We all just want a safe roof above our heads. It’s the least we should expect in this day and age.
“It’s tragic when we hear of children suffering from breathing difficulties or even losing their lives because of damp, mould and cold driven by poor energy efficiency in some privately rented homes.
“If elected, we will work with private landlords to produce a set of standards. This is a win win situation for them and for any future tenant who can be assured their home doesn’t come along with health risks.
“We want to make Northumberland the best county to live in and part of that will be for every Northumbrian to have a safe, warm home.”
